In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue… but new DNA evidence suggests there’s more to the story: Christopher Columbus may have been of Sephardic Jewish descent. Sephardic Jews primarily come from Spain and Portugal, and this intriguing connection adds a new layer to Columbus’s legacy.
For years, historians debated Columbus’s origins. While he was once believed to have been born in Italy, recent scholarship leans toward the idea that he was actually born in Spain.
Columbus had a deep desire to be buried on the island of Hispaniola, situated between Cuba and Puerto Rico. Although he was initially interred there, his remains have been relocated several times over the years. Today, an ornate tomb in Seville is thought to hold his final resting place.
